How Our Teams Are Structured

Important information for parents of prospective, incoming, and high school competitors.

Division B Grades 6–9

9th Graders (Middle School Teams)

Because of the size of Mentor Public Schools, 9th graders compete on their middle school's Division B team instead of the high school team:

  • Shore Middle School • Division B feeder team
  • Memorial Middle School • Division B feeder team

Students compete in Division B throughout 9th grade, gaining valuable tournament experience before moving up to the high school varsity and JV rosters.

Division C Grades 10–12

10th, 11th & 12th Graders (High School Team)

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors compete for Mentor High School across all 23 national events:

Rosters hold up to 15 students per team, with most members competing across 3 to 4 study, laboratory, and build events.

Volunteer Roles for the Mentor Invitational

Our annual host tournament runs on parent energy. No scientific background is required for any volunteer role!

Parents interested in riding the bus as travel chaperones must complete standard Mentor Public Schools volunteer registration. Contact Head Coach Mickey Pugh for details on upcoming travel rosters.

Parent Questions & Answers

Quick answers to the questions Mentor parents ask most often.

Mentor 9th graders compete in Division B with their middle school team (Shore Middle School or Memorial Middle School). They join the Mentor High School team (Division C) starting in 10th grade.

Not at all! Proctors, concessions workers, hospitality helpers, and setup crews require zero scientific background. Event supervisors from visiting schools write and run the actual tests; parent proctors ensure rooms run smoothly and papers are collected.

During the Mentor Invitational, results and awards placings will be streamed live on any smartphone via results.nebulyx.net, powered by Nebulyx and SphinxTEK LLC.
